Cults and Occultism: Why? The dictionary describes the word cult as: (1) Religious worship, (2) worship, and (3) worshippers. So a number of people worshipping could be called a cult. Who or what they are worshipping is really what would define them as just a cult, or a dangerous cult. It has been proven time and time again that dangerous cults have detrimental effects on the human personality, and have been known to end in mass murder-suicide pacts. It has been proven too, that anyone can be trapped in a cult. Cults do meet two very basic needs in all humans, and as usual, most individuals are not even conscious they have these innate needs. If humans were aware of their innate needs advertising would not be able to allure and motivate them to buy goods they do not need. The booklet , Cults and Occultism: Why? Is authored by Dr. O. J. Graham, who not only has researched and studied the topic extensively, but has spent thirty-eight years in mass communication media as a journalist and marketing and research director for a major international advertising agency. Dr. Graham cuts through the dozens of identifying marks that typifies dangerous cults and exposes the one mark that they all have in common.

Cults are not new. They have been in existence for as long as the human race has inhabited the earth. H. Idris Bell in his book, Cults & Creeds in the Graeco-Roman Egypt dates his writings on paganism from 334 B.C. He mentions Iris and Osiris. On page 14, he goes even further back to Astarte , sometimes called Ashtoreth (star) to B.C. 1913. In 992 B. C., king Solomon "forsook his God, and turned to Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Sidonians, the abominations of the Canaanites." The book is based on lectures given at the University of Liverpool in 1952. The author credits the Jews with their "monotheistic belief and their hatred of idolatry" for keeping aloof of the Egyptians cults….until of course, the fall of Solomon. In Judges 2:11-23 it is told that "Israel forsook their God and served Baal and Ashtoreth." Dangerous cults were then a mixture of idolatry and occultism, and they still are.

In 1962 with the occult explosion, newspaper headlines began screaming warnings against dangerous mind-bending cults. And it has got steadily worse. Listed below are a few of those headlines.

1. 'Swallowed by Cult?' Globe & Mail, April 1 1978, Front Page: Toronto. It concerned the case of Graham Murray.

2. 'The Jonestown Horror', McLeans Magazine, December 4, 1978, p. 32 'November 18th , more than 900 persons dead.'

3. 'Man on Trial Admits to Multiple Murders.' Globe & Mail, October 24, 1981, Front Page: Toronto.

4. 'Cults', Toronto Star, September 10, 1983, page A13, In this article, Ian Haworth expounds on the damaging effects that dangerous cults were having on university students. This article actually was instrumental on the start of an organizational called COMA (Council On Mind Abuse).

Many lawyers, and experts on the human personality, joined forces and proved that anyone can be a candidate for cult indoctrination, and these are listed in Dr. Graham's book. Also included are the methodology used by cults, the major effects on the personality and the solution. What makes this booklet a must read is that no other book on cults gives the reader the core of the problem of cults in general without generalizing, namely, the one mark that exposes a dangerous cult, and the two reasons why anyone human being can be lured into a cult. The book is deliberately made into a "booklet", so that it can be put into a pocket or purse, and read on your way to work. It gets into the nitty gritty of what, when, where, how, why, and the solution of spotting a dangerous cult quickly, and what to do about those two innate desires present in you and all human beings that might attract you to any cult - good or bad.
